Unique
Identification (UID)
- optional half-day Tuesday January 25, 2005 - $225
(includes RFID)
Productivity by RFID has partnered
with The National Defense Industrial Association
(NDIA), the Defense Acquisition University and other
elements of the Department of Defense, members of
defense industry, and a variety of UID/RFID vendors
to present a UID/RFID Seminar on January 25 and 26,
2005. The half day UID and full-day RFID seminars
are being presented at the Hilton Huntsville, in
Huntsville, AL.
The National Defense Industrial
Association (NDIA) and the Defense Acquisition
University (DAU) are undertaking a broad campaign to
ensure that defense industry suppliers are aware of
their responsibilities associated with two recent
mandates issued from OSD, AT&L. It is estimated that
over 43,000 DoD suppliers are impacted by the recent
mandates for Unique Identification (UID) and Radio
Frequency Identification (RFID). UID/RFID Seminars
are being scheduled at various dates and venues
across the U.S. in an effort to ensure that defense
industry companies and their supply chains are aware
of the new requirements and the associated
implementation timelines.
Overview
Key 2003 Defense Department
initiatives that directly affect the defense and
aerospace industry are the Policy for the Unique
Identification of Tangible Items (UID) and the
Policy for use of Radio Frequency Identification
(RFID) within the Department of Defense.
Mandatory incorporation of UID for
solicitations released after 1 January 2004 is but
the beginning of a long- term effort that will
facilitate item tracking in DoD business systems.
UID implementation will provide reliable and
accurate data for management, financial, and asset
management systems as well as data to support
engineering, logistics, and operational analysis.
The RFID strategy calls for taking
maximum advantage of the inherent life-cycle asset
management efficiencies that can be realized with
integration of RFID throughout DoD.
Leveraging this
technology will improve DoD’s ability to get the
warfighter the right materiel, at the right time,
and in the right condition.
At this UID/RFID Seminar DoD
officials will explain those UID and RFID policies
in detail. Defense industry representatives will
describe how they are implementing the newly
mandated procedures, identify the impacts of the new
policies to their business models and procedures,
discuss the challenges encountered and solutions
sought, and address the impacts of their
implementation strategy on their suppliers, large
and small. Marking and reading vendors will be
available to present technologies available on the
commercial marketplace that meet DoD requirements.
